A wealthy English investor and his American wife are murdered within days of returning to England after years abroad. A valuable diamond ring is also missing. It is up to Holmes to unravel the mystery, but Watson too finds himself pulled in as he does a bit of investigating on his own. This is a novella length story typical of the Holmes tales.
