Computer Science finds a variety of applications in different fields. In the modern scenario, the combination of human senses with field of computer science is becoming more and more common. It presents an introduction to Haptic Technology, its history, advantages, and disadvantages. It also explores the different applications of Haptic Technology. With the help of Haptic device people get a sense of touch with computer generated environments, so that when virtual objects are touched, they seem to be real and tangible. Haptic technology enables the user to interface with a virtual environment via the sense of touch by applying forces, vibrations, or motions to the user. This mechanical simulation helps in the creation of virtual objects, controlling of virtual objects and to augment the remote control properties of machines and devices. Over recent years, the development of haptic devices has exponentially grown, thanks to the rapid development in technology. With many kinds of information unexploited and the necessity to respond quickly to actions, the importance of haptic devices has rocketed. Designing, testing, and manufacturing haptic devices require multidisciplinary knowledge from computer science, programming, and coding to electromechanical design, human factors, and ergonomics. Haptic devices enable a user to interact with computer-generated environments and create a sense of realness and tangibility. This type of interaction is made possible by the actuators of the haptic device mechanism and is called haptic feedback.
The book aims to teach you about haptic technology in detail. You will develop a sense of awareness about the abilities and weaknesses of the human touch, along with learning how to build these mechatronic devices. Moreover, this book describes how haptic technology works, its devices, applications, and disadvantages. A brief explanation on haptics functions and its implementation in various fields of study is provided in this book. A description on some of its future applications and a few limitations of this technology is also provided.
