The practice of speaking in tongues is addressed in various contexts within Catholic teaching, particularly with regard to ensuring that spiritual gifts are used properly and in line with the teachings of the Church. Popes, including Paul VI, John Paul II, Benedict XVI, and Francis, have spoken positively about the Charismatic Renewal, recognizing the fruits it has borne in the lives of many Catholics. However, the Church also teaches that these experiences must be guided by proper discernment and remain in communion with the broader life and teachings of the Church. The exercise of glossolalia, like all charisms, should be under the guidance of Church authorities to ensure it contributes to the unity and edification of the community.
This book is an attempt to guide Catholic leaders in order to avoid the potential misuse of glossolalia and the possibility of deception.: Catholic exorcists have noted that spiritual experiences that bypass the intellect (such as speaking in tongues without understanding) can sometimes be manipulated by evil spirits. If a person is not grounded in solid doctrine and spiritual practice, they might misinterpret a psychological or even demonic influence as a legitimate spiritual gift.
