THE GENERAL REVIEW OF THIS BOOK took place before any news about the new coronavirus. But it would not be possible to launch it now without adding at least a few words about what is presented as the biggest economic crisis since 1929 and health crisis since the Spanish flu.
The pandemic does not change the Brazilian history that I describe here, it does not eliminate the need to promote the reforms and changes I propose, but it will certainly add the need to propose unprecedented measures and to face a new world order that we still do not know what it will be.
I intend to consider them in future editions of this work. However, at the same time, the pandemic has materialized some of the worst fears that I have addressed in this book and that have made the need for profound change even more immediate.
In the last days of March 2020, when I write these words confined in Fortaleza, it is still too early to estimate how we are going to get out of this political, economic and, above all, health drama. But however we leave, I believe that Brazil and the world will never be the same.
