The History and Future of OpenTelemetry
We are still in the early phases of the OpenTelemetry initiative. Only traces and metrics are supported at this time; log support is still in the early design stages. It is currently in beta. Project teams are focusing on enhancing metrics capabilities, extending language compatibility, integrating automated instrumentation through agents, and stabilizing the foundational elements of OpenTelemetry. After that, a release of production quality should become widely accessible. Along with Prometheus and Kubernetes, OpenTelemetry is one of CNCF's largest open-source initiatives, and the tech community is supporting it greatly. In the future, OpenTelemetry will dominate the cloud-native telemetry ecosystem as the primary observability framework.
