This course offers an in-depth exploration of Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) and its role in interventional psychiatry, combining foundational science with real-world clinical applications. Led by Dr. Hamed Ekhtiari-Assistant Professor, psychiatrist, and Associate Director of the Medical Discovery Team on Addiction at the University of Minnesota-the course is structured as a multi-part video series, drawing on over a decade of expertise in neuromodulation research, brain imaging, and clinical care.Participants will gain a clear understanding of TMS mechanisms, including the physics of stimulation, electric field targeting, pulse parameters, coil specifications, and cortical excitability. Special attention is given to personalized and state-dependent protocols, FDA-approved clinical applications, and emerging accelerated and biomarker-informed treatments. Practical demonstrations, historical context, and case-based discussions are integrated to reinforce learning.The workshop also highlights advanced topics such as the use of TMS in addiction, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), and bipolar depression, the integration of fMRI and brain connectivity in individualized targeting, and the ethical, regulatory, and practical challenges of delivering TMS in diverse care settings.From novice clinicians to advanced researchers, this course equips participants with the conceptual tools and technical confidence to critically evaluate, implement, and optimize TMS protocols in diverse psychiatric populations and treatment environments.
