In the development of the history of science, the histories of the individual scientific disciplines have played an enormously significant role. The goals and functions of these have recently received considerable attention, both because of the influence that such histories have had on the legitimacy and self-image of the disciplines and also because of the adaptability that they have shown when faced with the conceptual and methodological changes that they have undergone. With regard to these disciplines, there are, moreover, alternative approaches whose advantages and disadvantages are also the subject of debate: from within the discipline itself or from a more general starting point external to the history of science; from motives that lead into history or the problems of today, and out of an interest for the past unrelated to present-day concerns.
This book examines issues arising from scientific discovery in the social sciences. It features a range of disciplines including behavioral sciences, computer science, finance, and statistics with an emphasis on philosophy. The text is divided into seven chapters. Chapter 1 is fundamentals of scientific discovery in the social sciences. Fundamental scientific studies, also known as basic science, have paved the way to a society of knowledge by means of continuously evolving education systems, and have led to applied science and technological breakthroughs changing the World. Chapter 2 is about the role of Bayesian Narratives and chapter 3 is scale development in human and social sciences. Chapter 4 covers on the role of imagination in social scientific discovery. A close look at the methodology of interpretive social science reveals several abilities necessary to make a social scientific discovery, and one capacity necessary to possess any of them is imagination. For machines to make discoveries in social science, therefore, they must possess imagination algorithms. Chapter 5 aims to focus on the structure of scientific fraud and chapter 6 presents a focus on macroeconomics. Finally, chapter 7 presents a lucrative overview of formalizing theories in social science. Beyond the intentions and meanings associated with behavior, social scientists are also interested in mapping out the basic structures of society and the resources, social and otherwise that underwrite these structures. They are also concerned with the unintended consequences of actions and relations. In all of these investigations, social scientists go beyond deciphering the meaning and import of acts and relations to uncover their broader causes and effects.
